USA Men Bring Home Bronze

It’s been a good run for Per4max players at the London Games.

The USA men regained their place on the Paralympic wheelchair basketball podium, and a bit of revenge in the process, defeating the home team Great Britain 61-46 in front of nearly 13,000 fans at the North Greenwich Arena.

Per4max player Steve Serio, celebrated his 25th birthday on the night, scoring 20 points to lead the Americans with fellow Per4max players Josh Turek and Matt Scott adding 15 and 12.

Turek and Per4max’s Jason Nelms were the USA’s leading scorers over the course of the tournament, averaging 10.8 and 10.5 points in a very balanced attack. Serio averaged 7.1 points while shooting an incredible 61% from the field. Trevon Jenifer on his first Paralympic team was a defensive dervish as his high energy, harassing style created numerous turnovers and chaos for opponents. He led the team with five blocked shots, second most among all players in London.

The team showed great chemistry as well with Serio leading the team in assists with 33 while Nelms had 20. Turek was the co-leader in rebounds with 36; Matt Scott had 31 in just six of the eight games.

For the USA women and Per4max players Sarah Castle and Darlene Hunter, it will be tinged with a bit of frustration from a blown call in the semifinal when a USA basket that could have won the game was disallowed for an incorrect shot clock violation. Team captain Castle played through the tournament with a shoulder injury.

In tennis, Steve Welch, the USA’s most accomplished open player with two silver medals in singles from Atlanta and Sydney and a gold and bronze in doubles from Atlanta and Sydney, got to the second round, an amazing feat considering he was playing with injury. The UTA grad is also a former three-time MVP in the NWBA.
